WEEKEND ARRESTS NET GUNS, DRUGS
(9/25/2006) NEW HAVEN – Since Friday, 22 September, four guns have been seized from young people in the city. During a fight at a football game, five young people were arrested and police seized a fully-loaded 9-mm. gun. Yale police officers seized a sawed-off shotgun and ski masks from two 15-year-olds on High Street early Saturday morning. A search warrant executed at 105 Scranton Street resulted in the arrest of Cornelius Street, 31, of that address. He was charged with possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell, possession of a narcotic substance within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school, use of drug paraphernalia, theft of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon. Police seized a loaded .380 gun.
In response to residents’ concerns, police presence has been increased in the area of Whalley and Winthrop avenues. As a result, Carl Harvey, 22, of 355 Poplar Street, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell, possession of a narcotic substance within 1500 feet of a school, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school, criminal possession of a firearm, altering a serial number and carrying a pistol without a permit. A 17-year-old man from New Haven was arrested and charged with possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell, possession of a narcotic substance within 1500 feet of a school and possession of a narcotic substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school. A 16-year-old man from New Haven was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance within 1500 feet of a school and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell within 1500 feet of a school. Jovon Williams, 27, of 195 County Street, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to all of the above narcotics charges as well as operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Police seized $3,281 in cash, 13 pills, 19 bags of marijuana, 12 bags of crack and a .25 caliber handgun.
Members of the New Haven Police Department’s Narcotics Enforcement Unit and Street Interdiction Detail arrested seven individuals this weekend at locations throughout the city.
In the area of Chapel and Houston streets, Michelle Doran-Burns, 40, of 1285 Townsend Avenue, was charged with possession of a narcotic substance, possession of a narcotic substance within 1500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of drug paraphernalia within 1500 feet of a school. Jamie Luysterbourghs, 26, of 325 Humphrey Street, was charged with sale of a narcotic substance and sale of a narcotic substance within 1500 feet of a school. Police seized $20 cash and two bags of crack.
Juan Ayala, 28, of 154 Plymouth Street, was arrested in the area of 61 Chapel Street and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia within 1500 feet of a school and motor vehicle charges. Jonathon Torres, 20, of 142 Monroe Street, was arrested in the area of County and Goffe streets and faces motor vehicle charges.
In the area of Chapel and Dwight streets, a 13-year-old juvenile from New Haven was arrested and charged with robbery in the second degree and larceny in the second degree after officers observed the incident in progress. More arrests are expected.
Police served a warrant on Clifton Porte, 36, of 118 Sheldon Terrace and on James Smith, 18, of 473 Whalley Avenue.
